We are a research group at the Department of Sustainable Fuels and Green Chemistry at the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague and UCT Technopark in Kralupy nad Vltavou. Our research topics are motivated by Green chemistry principles and environmental sustainability. Catalyst design, synthesis and characterization coupled with testing in chemical reactions are our main directions

Our laboratories and technical hall are equipped with several reactors for catalyst testing as well as equipment for catalyst preparation and characterization.

Reactors  

Micro Catalyst Bed unit – This PC-controlled unit is used for hydrogenation under high pressure of various compounds. Two liquids with a gas such as H2 or N2 can be simultaneously fed into the fixed-bed reactor of 11 ml (16 cm x 0.85 cm). The unit can be pressured up to 280 bar while with maximum temperature is 450 °C. 

Bench Top Autoclave Reactor – This high-pressure stirred laboratory apparatus is used for diverse catalyst research, catalyst characterization, and surface chemistry studies under a neutral, reductive or oxidizing atmosphere. The autoclave can be pressured up to 200 bar, the maximum operating temperature is 500 °C.

Down-flow fixed-bed tube reactor - This reactor is used for the treatment of solid materials under high-temperature conditions and the study of their catalytic performance. The flow catalytic unit is equipped with: a tubular furnace (a heating zone with a length of 300 mm and a maximum temperature of 1000 °C), gas flow meters and an HPLC pump.

Flow reactor: The testing unit could be used for 0.1-10 g of catalysts. Two types of reactor could be used – a stainless-steel high-pressure reactor (pressure up to 5.0 MPa) and a glass reactor for testes at ambient pressure. Operating up to 800 °C depending on the temperature. Electronic mass flow controllers are used (0-500 ml/min) with a maximum pressure of 10 MPa. The HPLC pump (0.6-600 ml/h) is used to inject liquids into a pressurized reactor operating in continuous flow mode, while the syringe pump (0.73 µL/h to 2100 mL/h) is used for the glass reactor. 

Analytical methods

ICP-OES is used for the determination of metal leaching from catalysts in an organic matrix.

GC machine Agilent 7820A is used for the analysis of reaction products. The GC unit is equipped with an auto-injection system, a capillary column and FID, and is controlled by the OpenLAB CDS Workstation.

TPR/TPD/TPO instrument AMI-300 with a TCD and FTIR cell. The unique setup is able to determine catalyst properties such as reducibility or probe acid-base character. Moreover, the catalyst surface could be treated by various organics and their interaction analysed.

Methods

The catalyst preparation is our main focus and we are able to prepare co-precipitated as well as supported catalysts synthesized via a wide range of techniques. The following calcination and reduction in ovens could be done under different atmospheres.

The co-precipitation apparatus is intended for catalyst preparation under controlled temperature and pH values. The apparatus is equipped with: a magnetic stirrer with a hotplate (maximum temperature is 380 °C, maximum stirring speed is 1.500 rpm), benchtop pH-meter (resolution ± 0.01 pH, the maximum temperature is 100 °C) with a glass electrode, 2 peristaltic pumps for co-feeding reactants (maximum output is 100 ml/min).

Environmental Chemistry And Technology: Catalysis For Advanced Biofuels

Multifunctional Catalysts for Efficient Biomass Valorization

Significant attention and research efforts of the scientific community have been dedicated to the efficient valorization of biomass-derived oxygenates to advanced biofuels and petrochemicals. Efficient conversion of simple biomass-derived building blocks, such as different furanics, aldehydes/ketones, acids/esters and phenolics, requires a cascade of multiple conversion steps including, for instance, C-C coupling, dehydration and hydrogenation reactions relying on multifunctional catalysts instead of a cascade of single-function catalysts. Thus, the main motivation of the project is to design efficient multifunctional catalysts for multicomponent mixtures of biomass-derived oxygenates.

Main objectives and role of postdoc:

  • Rational design of multifunctional catalysts
  • Synthesis of multifunctional catalysts
  • Characterization of multifunctional catalysts
  • Evaluation of multifunctional catalysts in the model reaction system including C-C coupling and (partial) hydrodeoxygenation
  • Interpreting the structure-activity relationships as a way to improve the catalyst design

Planned activities:

  • Design and synthesis of multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts
  • Detailed characterization of synthesized catalysts
  • Activity, selectivity and stability testing of the synthesized catalysts
  • Analysis of the catalyst synthesis-structure-properties and structure-properties-activity-selectivity relationships
  • Research project proposal preparation

Specific requirements:

  • Practical experience in heterogeneous catalysis
  • Hands-on experience with synthesis/preparation of heterogeneous catalysts
  • Knowledge of catalyst characterization methods
  • Hands-on experience with assessment of the performance of heterogeneous catalysts

Who can apply?

We are looking for postdoc/junior researchers from around the world who:

  • are max. 7 years after receiving PhD diploma in relevant field
  • were employed outside the Czech Republic for at least 2 years in the last 3 years
  • published at least 2 publications in the last 3 years
  • are interested in one of the 8 key research areas in chemistry (see below)
  • can start the 20-month fellowship on 1 September or 1 October 2020

 How did you find Greencats group?

Greencats are a team of incredibly vibrant and resourceful researchers that were very helpful in guiding me throughout my traineeship. Due to their guidance, I felt excited to do my research alongside them as they built my curiosity to learn more about the project. Their extensive knowledge in chemistry and catalysis was useful and sparked my interest to pursue my Final Year Project in catalysis back at my home university. 

 How did you enjoy your stay at UCT?

It was a very delightful experience at UCT due to its great working environment. I learned a lot in terms of theoretical and practical chemistry, specifically in catalysis. The research labs were well-equipped with multiple instruments and apparatus that were convenient for me to conduct my research work. I was always well taken care of by my supervisors and truly enjoyed working with them. It was one of my favourite experiences to date. 

 What did it give you?

This traineeship taught me to be more hands-on in conducting research especially in handling analytical instruments. I was able to interpret the data and relate the results to my theoretical knowledge of chemistry and catalysis. It also taught me the importance of teamwork. These abilities were value-added skills and were very useful during my time as an R&D Chemist after completing my undergraduate studies. 

 What do you remember the most?

The most memorable experience was exchanging cultural and personal experiences with the team during ongoing experiments. Greencats and I come from very different cultural backgrounds. Thus, to be able to share my own stories and learn about their culture was incredibly fun and interesting. 

 What are you doing now after your stay?

After completing my studies, I joined one of Malaysia’s leading glove manufacturers as a chemist in their R&D department. My role is to implement high-impact research projects into production in multiple of their factories.
