Topic: Quantifying the basicity of reconstructed layered double hydroxides and correlating this with their performance in base-catalysed reactions

Goal: Advanced analysis of the changes in the structural/acid-base properties during the formation of (supported) reconstructed LDHs using in-situ techniques and elucidation of the relationship between the properties of the (supported) reconstructed LDHs and their catalytic performance and stability.
Abstract: The main aim of the project is to provide fundamental understanding of the relationship between the structural/textural/acid-base properties and the catalytic performance (activity/stability) of the reconstructed layered double hydroxides, LDHs, (in both bulk and supported forms). We aim to elucidate which of the basic sites possess superior activity in the aldol condensation of furfural and how to maximize their number. To achieve this ambitious goal, we have set the following specific objectives: (i) To describe the changes of structural/acid-base properties during the transformation of mixed oxides into the reconstructed LDHs using suitable in-situ techniques, (ii) To determine the influence of the support on the structural/acid-base properties of reconstructed LDHs supported on alumina, (iii) To elucidate the relationship between the structural/acid-base properties of the (supported) reconstructed LDHs and their catalytic performance (mainly activity and its long-term stability).
